Thrift Store Alterations
I’ve had to mend so many holes and straps on all of my bags lately, that I decided to make a new one myself. A couple days ago I set out looking for a good flannel and some tough water resistant material to make a duffel bag. I managed to find both of these in one very worn, very old Calvin Klein parka at a thrift store. $18 was a bit much, but it offered a lot of material and fasteners to work with.
First I reshaped the coat lining into the outside of the bag. Then, fixed the bottom and interior of the bag with the outer, water resistant fabric. Next made straps out of a few folded layers of the coat lining and some leather handles from what was once a collar. After making some pockets and adding snaps, I sewed the coat zipper on and just some 6 hours after I started… my new backpack!
