Jody’s free roaming friend El Guapo, aka Fuzzy, aka Josh, is working aboard an Pacific sailing vessel these days. I guess he’s grown fond of quite a few sea shanties, here’s just one.

Don’t you just hate it when you have tons of work to do, but instead you’re at the library downloading your 5th season on The Gilmore Girls?

Jesse’s blog is so good.
I hope he writes my epitaph.

Jesse finally wrote his first big post from Changsha, China

I love every word of it.

First week in China

I have enjoyed my first week in Changsha.  I had trouble sleeping the first few days.  I just felt like I was lying in bed with my eyes closed.  But I am fine now, and feel more comfortable.  I thought my apartment would be very small, but it is actually very big.  It was really hot when I first got here, but has been nice the past couple of days.  I think it will become warm again before it starts getting cold.  Hopefully I will be prepared for the winter, being from Ohio.  Even though it doesn’t get very cold, it may still be difficult because heating is not usually used.  Changsha University has a fairly big and beautiful campus.  There is a lot of trees and wildlife.  Walking through many parts of the campus is like walking through a park.  There are some places to go near campus, if I feel like going somewhere but don’t want to ride the bus.  If I take the bus downtown, it will take almost one hour, but it is worth going from time to time.  Downtown Changsha is just like a really nice city in America.  It is still different but everything is relatively new so it looks nice.  The Chinese Walmart is actually kind of cool.  The first restaurant I ate at in downtown, was already the best chinese food I have ever had.  The food on campus is still good and they have a large selection.  But the food in the restaurants is much better.  And I don’t expect the first restaurant to be the best I have had for very long.  I think I will try KFC soon, because it is much different than America’s.  I also tried bubble tea, which was great.  It tasted almost the same, I only got milk tea, but the tapioca had some red bean flavor which made it really good.  It feels strange being a foreigner.  Maybe more than I expected.  Some people will stare at me.  It’s usually not bad though, because they don’t want to be rude.  They just notice me and want to take a look.  The kids are really cute though.  Maybe some of them don’t even know people like me exist …  Foreigners being in downtown is a little common, but the area I am in is not as common.  So I think some people are just surprised to see me.

I FINALLY made a shop on Etsy! I don’t know why it’s taken so long, but I just added my 4 most recent books, with more to come! So, if you were ever unsure where to order or were just too shy to contact me… head to Etsy to buy my stuff!

My little brother, Jesse, moved to Changsha, China this morning?! This is quite possibly the craziest decision of anyone in my family, ever. I’m super excited to hear about his travels… and hope to get some candy or seeds mailed to me!
I’ll miss you buddy!

THE FUTURE REVIEW
if you’re a fan of miranda july, or just of life altering indie films… you’ll really want to like this movie. i mean, you’ll sit down and be totally ready to laugh and feel connected to every word miranda has to whisper. but once you’ve made the commitment to love this movie, it may sting a little when the future gets a bit trivial.
of course, miranda is successful in her usually way: of narrating the mundane lives of a generation lost to wasted potential; articulating exactly how you feel at exactly this moment. regrettably, little things like, miranda’s complete incapability to smile without relaying discomfort, get in the way of an otherwise poetic film. her eyes, iridescent drops of blue, always seem to be sheltering tears, eliciting a confused response from the audience… or maybe just from me. though, after ninety minutes of watching indifferent sadness, i felt a little less motivated than when the movie began.
so while it’s full of poignant lines about the human condition, and the suffering of white privilege, the future doesn’t exactly make you want to change your life… but i guess it really wasn’t its’ job to change your shitty life anyway.

I’m nearly through Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time” and decided to pause a moment to visit the wikipedia page on ‘Time’… which subsequently led to about 30 tabs of related tangents.
MY MIND IS CAVING IN ON ITSELF.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TIME.

Be Here Now by Ram Dass.

Be Here Now by Ram Dass.

Be Here Now by Ram Dass.

Be Here Now by Ram Dass.

I read the most amazing book today, Be Here Now by Ram Dass.
On a whim, or maybe not at all on a whim, I picked up this book at Powell’s Books yesterday and started flipping through it. Regrettably, I had really only purchased it for the illustrations. Scrawled across each page are sometimes beautiful, sometimes profound sketches drawn from the text. At the time, I had no idea how intensely relevant the words would be to me.
Ram Dass, born Richard Alpert, published this book with the Lama Foundation after a life-changing stay in India. Years before, he was dismissed from teaching psychology at Harvard University for his experimentation with human consciousness… and LSD.
The book, Be Here Now, is an introduction to moving towards enlightenment, clearly articulating the thoughts of those who find themselves questioning the drama of Life.
